SHS's AFL Journey

The City of Salem Schools just wrapped up its 2010 Summer Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy consisted of teachers, counselors, and administrators from throughout the division. The purpose was to plan for the upcoming year in a unified manner and to help the division cast a big picture vision.

AFL was one of the major topics of the 2 day academy. Salem High School had a chance to share with the rest of the schools about its "AFL Journey". This journey included the mistakes, successes, accomplishments and future goals related to implementing the philosophy of AFL into SHS's instructional practices.

The following link - SHS AFL Results for Ning.pdf - will open up a pdf version of the presentation that was shared.

  • It was really neat to see how seriously the students took the survey. Their answers about the teacher who does the best job preparing them for major assessments were very insightful. They used that question as an opportunity to give a lot of teacher very constructive praise.
  • I found it interesting how students were so positive on their survey about the portal. There's something to that that I'm sure needs to be explored. I remember feeling especially determined when I learned to calculate my overall grades in college so that I could see where I was the whole semester and not just cross my fingers that it would all work out in the end!
  • Thanks for posting this! I am in my third year of being a Formative Assessment Coach. It's great to see others going through a similar learning cycle/process. LOVED the results slides! They must feel so fired up about those changes. Congrats to them and especially their students.
