1. Greenbrier East: Thoughts on Professional Development

For today's workshop we will be using online Forum Discussions as a way to:

  1. Model the use of 21st Century Skills/Technology
  2. Enable greater discussion than the typical workshop format would allow
  3. Collaborate
  4. Create a record of our ideas that can be used in the future

This Forum Discussion has been created as a way to practice using Forum Discussions and to make sure that all participants are able to access the AFL Ning.

When Professional Development activities or topics haven’t been “all that you could ever hope for”, what has been the reason/problem?

    Often the info is too difficult to apply to 100 students in 45 minutes and still cover the subject content.

    Professional development is always welcome.  I can't seem to apply it to my classroom though.  I often take away small pieces to use.

    The reason professional day topics do not work is the presenter has not taken the time to find out how the topic should relate to the teachers or educators in their local area. Sometimes the topics is not related to those who attend. They need to relate the topic in areas that the teachers or educations teach or need improvement.

    Relevancy to the Severe/Pofound Special Education population of students.

    Many professional development sessions that I have attended have not been tailored for my specific needs.   Many times we are covering material that we are already acquainted with.   It is frustrating when we cover topics that are never again addressed.  My preference would be to work in small subject matter oriented groups with a focus on topics that we can apply in our classrooms.

    Generally not relevant to all classrooms. Things look good on paper, but not very realistic.

    Many times a sales promotion.  Not relevant to high school/subject areas.  Some presentations are unrealistic for the classroom--based on an ideal situation, not reality.
