See everyone tomorrow.

I am the principal of Signal Knob Middle School in Strasburg, VA.  This is my third year as principal of Signal Knob, however, I began my teaching career 24 years ago at the school.  It is an honor to work in my hometown, serving the community that played a vital role in my success as a student.  Signal Knob began discussing AFL last year when Scott presented on one of our professional development days.  His presentation sparked a lot of dialogue among the staff and caused teachers to begin to think differently about AFL.  I look forward to our continued growth with AFL.

I am the Supervisor of Federal Programs for Shenandoah County Public Schools, where I've spent my entire career of 33 years. I have twenty years of teaching experience. I've taught Special Education, been an elementary Reading Specialist, a Reading Recovery teacher and Reading Recovery Teacher Leader. I have been a central office administrator for the past thirteen years.

I am a special education teacher with a biology certification.  I teach biology to students with IEPs - learning disabilities, autism, other health impairments.  My interest in assessment comes for my background with differing learners - who need to be able to earn credits and graduate, showing competencies (which they have) in different ways and different times.  Most sped kids want to be successful, we just need to meet them halfway.

Thanks for introducing yourself, Lena, and thanks for loving young people with special needs!

Hello!  My name is Stacie and I teach 7th grade English Language Arts at Hardin Reynolds Memorial School in Patrick County, Va.  An instructor in our district recommended an article on the subject of assessment; specifically one referring to caring more about what students are learning as to opposed to their numerical/percentage grade.  I wholeheartedly believe our focus should be more on feedback and helping students take better control of their learning and less about their "grade".  I look forward to learning more about assessment here.  Thank you!

Wonderful! I hope you find this site helpful as you seek to emphasize learning instead of "grade earning".  Let me know if I can help you.

I am a high school English teacher in Henry County, VA. I am constantly looking for ways to better my instruction to help my students learn the content more effectively rather than simply striving for a grade. I want to assess how my students are learning so I can best help them master the content in the future, and the best way I see to do this is to emphasize the standards rather than the end-all grade.

Welcome aboard, Harley!!

Hi All!

My name is Roger and I have been the principal at Nelson Middle School for the last five years. Over the course of my tenure here were have maintained full accreditation status but have been borderline each year. When I heard Scott speak last fall and then again this spring at Nelson and in a conference, I was convinced that we needed to shift more towards the assessment philosophy he preaches. We have room for growth and I am certain this is the right approach.

Roger

Keep me posted if there's anything I can do to help you out!

I am new to the Salem High School family and will be serving in the role of English/ Yearbook teacher. I am very interested in Standards Based Learning and am excited to learn more on the application side of how this looks in the classroom.
