1. Chilhowie: Thoughts on Professional Development

For today's workshop we will be using online Forum Discussions as a way to:

  1. Model the use of 21st Century Skills/Technology
  2. Enable greater discussion than the typical workshop format would allow
  3. Collaborate
  4. Create a record of our ideas that can be used in the future

This Forum Discussion has been created as a way to practice using Forum Discussions and to make sure that all participants are able to access the AFL Ning.

When Professional Development activities or topics haven’t been “all that you could ever hope for”, what has been the reason/problem?

    Seemed irrelevant and not in touch with students we are dealing with.

    Sometimes I do not understand the details of a particular topic, easily get bored and then feel guilty because I'm not paying attention. Sometimes the sessions are too long, sitting for hours in an uncomfortable chair in a cold room.

    Most are not useful in classrooms, not relevant information, good ideas but not enough time to use with current testing standards and requirements.

    Teachers don't buy into the "product" because they fail to see the relevance.

    Sometimes geared to the newest fad or the new concept everybody is doing and then fades away

    The training did not apply to me. There was not anything to take back and use. I hate to leave a training feeling like it was a waste of my time.

    Sessions that concentrate heavily on the theoretical, philosophical ideas instead of the practical tips that teachers can implement the very next day in their classes

    Most of our professional development sessions are not relevant or timely.
