    When a student gets an A, or a B, or a C, or a D, or an F as a final grade on a report card or on a transcript, what does that mean?  And what should go into that grade - what should it be comprised of so that it means what you want it to mean?

  • A grade should reflect a student's level of mastery.

  • A student grade should represent the student's learning. Was the material mastered?

  • A grade should be a reflection of students learning compared to grade level and content area expectation.  

  • Ideally a grade should reflect student learning and their level of mastery on the content that is taught.  However, the conversation is often muddied by a philosophical war on the inclusion of effort, participation, extra credit, classroom behavior, etc. into a final grade.

  • A final grade should be a measurement of growth and where the student ends up in their learning journey, not the struggles they may go through during the journey.

  • A final grade is the level of content mastery the student learned.

  • A student's grade should be a reflection of their mastery. Should we only count their summative assessments? Because in formative assessment stage they're still learning? We count homework because we want them to do it, but then they don't do it.

  • A grade should reflect the learning, understanding and growth of the student. It should be a combination of understanding and participation/effort/time spent working toward mastery of the skill/content. It should reflect what they can do independently.
